Some of the most frequently asked questions about fairground modelmaking.
How long have the MFD range of plans been available? Nearly 50 years since Vic King started the range.
How long have the DRE range of plans been available? Nearly 35 years since I started the range.
How long have the BB Murdock ‘Showland Library’ range of plans been available? Nearly 70 years.
How many models have been built to all of these designs? Several thousands with many winning medals at the major model shows.
Which shows include fairground models? There are very few model shows dedicated to fairground models. The largest are those that take place concurrently with the major fairs at Hull, Nottingham, Loughborough, Oxford and Kirkaldy. The show at Staverton, near Gloucester, is probably the largest independent show. Faiground models may also be seen at some traction engine rallies and places like Hollycombe. The two enthusiasts’ society magazines and websites carry details of events.
Can I buy built fairground models? Because there are very few fairground modellers it is rare for complete models to come to the market. Of those that do there are even fewer high quality models – numbered in single numbers per year.
Is there an auction house that specialises in these models? No
Should I buy or sell ‘online’? A buyer really needs to see a model working before making an offer or buying. The quality of models offered, particularly ‘on line’, varies dramatically. In the case of a working and lit model this is particularly important. It is essential that the model comes complete with its electrical power supplies as these may need to be built specially and consequently very expensive. Wiring should be in good condition. Go to shows to get some ideas of what models should look like and talk to modellers.
How do I look after a working fairground model? Any working model will need regular maintenance. This is particularly important if it is not used very often. The model should be protected from dust, knocks and bright light – paint fades rapidly. The mechanism should be oliled and greased regularly. After some use you may need to strip down the mechanism to clean out old oil and make any adjustments.
